In Emilia Romagna, there are currently five magnificent wakeparks. Starwake is one of the main full size cables in Italy, while the others are all characteristic and different two towers facilities. How do you practice wakeboarding?

Wakeboarding is a water sport with similar structural characteristics to water skiing, but more similar to snowboarding in terms of the rider's posture and the anchoring of the board to the feet. In fact, the wakeboarding discipline involves skiing on the surface of the water with the board anchored to the boots, assuming a lateral posture (goofy or regular) with respect to the gait, towed by a complex system of towers, ropes and winches typical of cable wake parks (generally located in natural and artificial lakes); or towed by vessels such as boats and jet skis.

Wakeboarding stunts, or tricks in slang, can be of various kinds, with compositions similar to snowboarding: rotations, somersaults, twists and so on. Wakeboard tricks can be performed on the water's surface, in the wake of the boat, or by sliding on obstacles positioned along the path.

How is wakeskating practiced?

Wakeskate is a water sport with characteristics very similar to wakeboarding, but with the main difference that the board is not anchored to the feet like in wakeboarding and therefore the rider is free-footed just like in skateboarding, with a larger board than a street skate, but which in some ways resembles it: the wakeskate has grip like a skateboard and classic skateboarding shoes are used. In wakeskate too, the gait is lateral with the left or right foot forward (respectively: regular or goofy).

Unlike wakeboarding, the tricks follow the logic of street skateboarding, therefore: shove-it, bigspin, flip, etc. flat on the water surface, in the wake of the boat, or to be performed on obstacles positioned along the path.

How does the Full Size cable park work?

Full Size Cables are the type of wakeparks characterized by a circular towing system with the possibility of having multiple riders simultaneously in sequence skiing along the line and between the obstacles. Unlike the Two Towers system, where you turn one at a time, there are multiple “hooks” arranged along the cable with the tops of the balances anchored to them, which continue continuously along the perimeter of the towers.

The towing speed is approximately 30-32 km/h

How do the Two Towers (one to one) wakeparks work?

The Two Towers are that type of wakepark characterized by a towing system arranged in a straight line with the possibility of skiing one rider at a time for the entire duration of the run. The runs generally last between 15 and 20 minutes and the athlete has a more direct relationship with the driver who can give advice and help him improve. In fact, the Two Towers is also used to teach wakeboarding in the early stages as well as to train intensely at high levels.

Unlike the Full Size Cable, these Two Towers systems have a single hook on the cable with a balance bar anchored to it. In this case the system does not continue continuously but is driven by a driver who sets the direction and speed of the ride. When a rider falls, the driver stops the hook and recovers it to start it again from the water and continue the run.

The towing speed is approximately 28-30 km/h, but the driver can regulate it and possibly decrease it.

What equipment do you need?

To practice wakeboarding or wakeskating, in addition to the boards and boots in the case of wakeboarding, you need to be equipped with the right safety equipment (always mandatory in all cases): a life jacket or impact vest and a protective helmet.
